Eleven Twenty-Seven Web : Programming and Consulting

North Star
At Group C Design, I took on the role of lead programmer on the North Star Frozen Treats site for Prairie Farms. The site uses PHP and MySQL to manage the "cool cards" feature as well as the product line (Ice Box) and image library sections. We worked with several internal illustrators to come up with the exact look and feel for the site to appeal to children of all ages. For this project, I managed a full-time employee responsible for programming the "Dancing Norton" Flash game in the Playground section.

Washington University - University College
Washington University's Adult Education division is called "University College." University College approached Group C Design with an overwhelmingly complicated site of hundreds of pages haphazardly branching out from the home page through hundreds of links. When trying to grasp the size of the site, University College staff made a physical site map using printouts mounted on the wall. The map was a MESS of links that no one could follow. As lead programmer and consultant, I was first responsible for establishing an Information Architecture study involving the stakeholders from the marketing department to Deans to the web master. Through a series of online surveys and in-person focus groups, we were able to list the main areas of content (a site map) and messaging for the site to appeal to the goals of visitors as well as those of the University College. I worked with designers to program a set of templates for use on every page of the site. I then programmed several back-end functions in PHP and MySQL including the home page content and the calendar section of the site. Leading a three-person team and gathering content from the originally hectic site, we programmed over 400 pages of this site using extremely centralized scripting with included headers, footers and functions on each page. Currently the web master of this site works with minimal available time to update the site almost daily. She has mastered following our Information Architect document in choosing what information belongs where and in following the style established in the beginning. Note that the "Course Listings and Registration" popup section of the site, while using style sheets I programmed, was in no way programmed by Group C Design or myself.

Tripos
Lead programmer for the original Tripos web site. The original site featured over 600 pages of image-intensive content. After deployment, the site rapidly grew to over 1000 pages. Working with a small team of HTML coders and my extensive template library, we programmed this completely static site in under 6 weeks meeting the deadline. The Tripos site won the first ever St. Louis Web Developer's award for "Best Corporate Site." My code even received a special mention for how well it was written.

This site is no longer available online. You can see some highlights by clicking here.

Mortgage Associated Services
Mortgage Associated Servers (MAS) is a unique company processing closing documents for mortgage brokers around the country. MAS came to Group C initially for an identity system and web site. After numerous meetings we discovered that MAS was also looking to streamline their mortgage processing through an Internet application. Previously, MAS relied solely on several 24/7 fax machines (and backup services) that would spool paper continuously for MAS to process using their proprietary internal software. Our system completely changed how MAS does business and processes loans. We implemented this new system in four phases. Phase 1 was a digital fax implementation where all incoming faxes were received by a server and instantly turned into PDFs. In Phase 2, we built a secure system where mortgage brokers could upload hundreds of data points for numerous concurrent loans directly into the proprietary system in use at MAS. To accomplish this, I worked with the software developer directly to use a pre-built library of functions to talk to the system. This phase alone relieved 90% of the key stroking needed to complete a mortgage closing. Phase 3 was an automation of all forms previously filled out manually for each closing. Virtually all of the 50-100 pages of a closing could now be generated on the fly by software. Phase 4 was an automation of billing and collections for all services. In the end, MAS was extremely satisfied with the site and they continue to use it daily.

Trademark Medical
I was hired to design and build the complete web site for this medical products distributor. The site featured two halves: one for personal-use buyers (end users) and a second for institutional/hospital buyers. The personal-use half featured a complete shopping cart system including secure credit card processing. The institutional half allowed institutions with an account number to order products in bulk. The site included an administrative back-end for management of products and imagery. Unfortunately, Trademark Medical was bought a year ago and my site taken down.

Uniwood Fome-Cor
Uniwood/Fome-Cor, a division of Nevemar, hired Group C Design to build a suite of sites for numerous product lines and associated administrative back-ends. The suite consisted of three products sites (Fome-cor construction insulation, Gatorfoam graphic design art board, and Gatorply furniture backing board), an online training site and two administrative back-end sites - one for training administration and one for site content administration. These sites were designed using cross-site templates for less expensive build out. The interactive training program was originally built in Flash by a developer in North Carolina. I was asked to complete his programming and tie the Flash into a record keeping system and score-reporting system for managers. I managed a freelancer who programmed an administrative back-end to allow managers to log in and track employee testing and scores and allow access to subordinate managers. For all three public sites, I programmed an administrative back-end to allow upper management to grant access to clerical level staff who maintained certain parts of the site such as the distributor lists or news articles. The site was 90% dynamic with Nevemar having the ability to change almost all content on the site at will including news, success stories, links, distributors and trade shows.

Alcan Composites
In 2004, Alcan Composites USA in St. Louis bought Nevemar. We won the bid to reprogram the Gatorfoam site to fit in line with the Alcan corporate design standards. We took this opportunity to make the site nearly 100% dynamic including the product listings. As Alcan consolidated product lines with the old Nevemar products, the product offerings were rapidly changing. My administrative back-end allowed the free creation and deletion of products as needs arose. Administrators are allowed to change all aspects of products. The dynamic Flash product selector uses the database values in assisting visitors in finding the right product by choosing application, fabrication technique, color, thickness, sheet size or ANY combination of those parameters. This site has become the standard used internally and externally at Alcan Composites for demonstrating their product line.

Connectronics
Connectronics, a custom cable manufacturer, needed the ability to show their complete line of custom made cables. I built this custom site with the ability for Connectronics to upload images and cross references for their cables. Connectronics originally populated this database with thousands of custom cables, cross-references and photographs. I wrote scripts to automatically create thumbnails for each image. Although the original site we designed is gone, the engine I wrote is still there and is maintained by Connectronics.

Incyte Genomics
Lead programmer and manager for an extensive multimedia project for Incyte Genomics. This CD-ROM features many professionally directed video segments showing their genetic research labs, techniques and operations. Several video segments were augmented with Director animation I programmed using Lingo. I managed all video compression and digitizing for this project and the mass production and insertion into a national magazine.
